1881 trade card for Columbia Bicycles and Tricycles manufactured by The Pope Manufacturing Co., which had just moved to Boston (597 Washington Street). The card includes a view by “Copeland” of a man on a high wheel and a woman on a tricycle, framed in a large wheel. Testimonials listed on the verso include one by Rev. George Frederick Pentecost (1842-1900); the superintendent of drawing in Minneapolis schools; Doctor Benjamin Ward Richardson, who extolls the tricycle for women’s health (his views on “Woman as a Sanitary Reformer” had just been published); and, testimony from two British women who had logged 470 miles on tricycles.

A wonderful Victorian trade card, lightly tinted.

In excellent condition with expected light toning.
