Early 1960s Legnano Gran Premio - refreshed in the late 70s/early 80s
This bike is not for the purist collector since it has been reworked during its lifetime. The serial number dates the bike to around 1960 when this bike would have been blue or green with old style Legnano decals. Braze-on top tube cable guides and downtube bottle mounts were added some time after that when the bike was repainted. This bike would have originally been bullt-up with early Camagnolo GS drivetrain with Magestroni cranks and headset. The 27" wheels would have been standard for the US import bikes of the time with Campagnolo Nuovo Tipo Legnano engraved hubs, though the brakes would have been Universal.
The current specs are:
  • Seat tube: 57.5cm center to center
  • Top tube: 56.5cm center to center
  • Campagnolo Nuovo Record Drivetrain - crankset, shifters and front and rear derailleurs
  • Campagnolo Gran Sport Brakeset with Scott/Mathauser finned "Superbrake" brakepads and a rear drop bolt
  • Campagnolo Nuovo Record Seatpost
  • Cinelli Unicanitor Saddle
  • Original Ambrosio Legnano engraved handlebars (36cm CTC) with TTT stem (110)
  • Campagnolo Nuovo Tipo/GS wheelset with Rigida rims (straight and true) - 120mm rear wheel spacing (5 speed)
  • Modern Tange headset that is just about the only headset available with the extremely short stack height of the original Magistroni. The new headset has no markings and looks just like a Campy NR track headset of the 70s & 80s. I even added a Campy NR locknut to preserve the illusion.
  • Please note that the pedals shown in the photos are not included as part of the sale, they ended up on another bike.

  • The condition is pretty good considering the age of the bike (no dings or dents), but the paint has suffered a little bit since the repaint around 1980. It has fresh cables, handlebar tape, tires and tubes, and has been fully tuned up.
I probably would have kept this bike for retro/E'roica rides, but its a just bit too small for me. So, it's time to move it on to make space for a bike that fits better.
    Thanks for looking!
