Info provided by my friend and his UCI Father who knew Roy: IF you
Google Roy Simonson, there’s actually several articles about him that come up.
The main one’s called “The Nonchalant Brilliance of Roy Simonson” and I guess
he invented “the first cable-based circuit equipment” called FreeMotion Fitness
in 1999 and was largely responsible for dethroning Nautilus from the top of the
exercise equipment industry. He and his brother started a company when they
were very young (early 20’s) and sold it to Cybex after only 4 years. Quite the
big name in the fitness equipment biz. The frame was made in 1988, out of Tange Prestige
tubing (except the seat stays, which are Columbus Aero). All fillet brazed as I
recall. Roy was located in Wyoming at the time. He was in Colorado Springs for
Veterans Nationals (1987?) and he had made himself a really fancy funny bike
for the Kilo. After Nationals concluded, he sold the frame to a local guy, who
was using it at the velodrome at the same time Jeannie Longo was there
(prepping for an Hour Record attempt, as I recall). Her husband, Patrice Ciprelli,
noticed the bike and asked the guy about it. Patrice was very impressed with it
and asked the guy if he could try it out, which he did. One quick ride was all
it took, and he was showing it to Jeannie and my Dad. They got Roy’s number,
called him and asked if he’d like to make a bike for Jeannie. Dimensions were
specified, a price was quickly negotiated (I think Dad may have pitched in on
one or more of these- he and Jeannie were that tight. She used to refer to him
as her “American father” sometimes…even to the French press) and after a couple
of weeks or so, she had a new pursuit bike. I believe she set two hour records
and at least one World Pursuit Championship on that first bike. She liked it so
much that she talked the French Women’s National Pursuit Team into ordering a
set of frames. I only won the one State Championship on this orange one in 1989
