Absolute stunning pair of baroque steel cut engravings from the Marie de Medici Cycle, which was completed by the Dutch master Peter Paul Rubens in the 1620s. The series Is currently housed in the Louvre. The Marie de' Medici Cycle is a series of twenty-four paintings commissioned by the queen of France Marie de' Medici, widow of Henry IV for her palace in Paris. The Queen wanted Rubens to depict the various tumults and accomplishments of her life and her regency. The first engraving is titled “le dembarct de maria medici” ( or The Disembarkation at Marseilles) which was completed in 1622 and depicts The Queen arriving in Marseilles after having been married to King Henry IV by proxy in Florence in 1600. She would become widowed and rule France until her sons coming of age and ascension to the throne in 1614. The second engraving is titled “La Majorité du Roy Louis XIII”, ( or Louis XIII Comes to Age) and was completed by Ruben’s in Italy in 1623 and depicts a allegorical transference of power from the Queen to her son, Louis XIII’s as he reached the age of 13 on October 20th, 1614. The ship represents the state of France which is now being steered by the young King. Both prints are expertly mounted and framed in a set of matching Baroque-style frames. I believe the steel cut engravings were done in the mid 19th century and are over 150 years old.
