Vintage Schwinn Huret Speedometer 0-40 Mph White Gray Bicycle

This is a gorgeous and relatively rare accessory by Huret of France in full working order: their own house-branded version of the round-dial Schwinn Approved speedometer, Schwinn part number 08 430, which appeared for only four years in the Schwinn catalog, from 1969 to 1972. Unlike the much more common chrome rectangular Schwinn Approved speedometers that Huret made all the way from the late 1960s into the early 1990s, this style was seen (in either Schwinn Approved or Sting-Ray form) for four years only, and was gone by 1973. Huret obviously made some for themselves as well (used in both bicycle and moped applications), and this is one example. (My completely unscientific guess is that this round, white-dial design was intended to replace the similar round, white-dial, plastic-bodied Stewart Warner-built Schwinn speedometer, which was phased out after 1970.) It's compatible with the same drive hubs and drive cables used on all the other Huret-made Schwinn Approved or Sting-Ray speedometers. (See my other listings for some examples of those.) The speedometer head is 2½" in diameter and 1½" deep (plus the drive cable connection in back). It has a polished chrome rim, glass face, and painted steel housing, with red numbers on a white dial with a black pointer. To find one of these round models at all is nice; to find one in this condition is even better. This has been disassembled, cleaned, lubed and rebuilt. Its painted case has been refinished in the original gray Hammertone texture, and its glass lens was cleaned on both sides. The chrome bezel and chrome handlebar clamp have both been polished and waxed. It has had a complete going-over, and is all ready to go back into service. There is no accumulated mileage; it's just passing 0000. 1 . This head can be used on any size of front wheel, as these Huret models are calibrated by the drive hub (not included), not the speedometer head. NOTES: Drive cable and drive hub are not included. This Huret speedo head fits any size of bicycle; the correct reading is determined by the Schwinn or Huret drive hub (sold separately), which should be stamped with the correct front wheel size for your bike.
