In 2014 this 1977 Reynolds 531 frameset was equipped with NOS or lightly used Campagnolo Record and Super Record components from various eras. It has been ridden occasionally since then, perhaps 400 miles on clean roads in nice weather, spending most of its time on a hook or displayed on the wall. It is a joy to ride. Super-light rims and tires make it climb and feel like much lighter bike. The 30mm wide tires and “American-style” race geometry smooth rough pavement. The saddle is comfortably broken in. The frame accommodates Campagnolo side-pull brakes; later models did not, which is one reason I chose this vintage for the project. The paint is original and in rough shape, but the frame has no dents or rust, and the chrome is mostly unmarked. The size is 55cm, C-C with a 55cm top tube. The frame is aligned, rides straight and true, no problem hands off the bars, and descends with confidence. The brakes are strong and silent. It is ready to ride, no issues. I sought out components that I liked and remembered from my youth. The TA water bottle is NOS; the cage is vintage, with patina. The color-matched pump works strongly. The only braze-on is a rear derailleur cable guide on the chainstay. The bolt-on bottom bracket cable guide and top tube cable clamps are Campagnolo. The black brake lever hoods are genuine Campagnolo NOS and compliment the black Alfredo Binda toe clip straps, which are worn but sound. I include an unridden spare tire that matches the tires on the rims (it is charged with glue) in a leather Cinelli-style tire bag that also contains a Campagnolo T-wrench and 5mm allen wrench; a red Christophe leather strap secures it to the saddle rails. Three flaws, apart from the paint, I must mention: The front derailleur cable securing bolt has stripped the threads in the alloy derailleur arm. A longer bolt with a nut was substituted. It works without issue. The rear over-locknut frame dimension was originally 120mm; it was spread to accommodate the 126mm 6-speed hubs, and the dropouts were aligned. But the fit is tight and the dropouts must be spread a millimeter or two when fitting the rear wheel, easy but annoying. The left pedal dust cap has scraped the road! (See photo.)
